  • Youth Speak Out, Bill O'Reilly Listens

Some of you may have heard about youth participating in the Global Youth Activation Summit during the 2009 World Winter Games reaching out to Bill O'Reilly after his February 9 guest Dick Morris used the word "retarded" to describe his own lack of knowledge on details in President Obama's stimulus package.

This issue has made it all the way to the Huffington Post op-ed column where Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver wrote about his feelings on the issue.  Before you read Tim's column, check out the two videos that got this started.

First, a video response made by the youth participating in the summit, to Bill O'Reilly that was filmed and edited overnight in reaction to Dick Morris' comment.

    Next, O'Reilly's answer

Check out what Tim had to say and share your thoughts below.

  • O'Reilly's Reality Check 3/5/09

Bill O'Reilly on March 5, 2009 "The use of that word is unnacceptable even if there is no denigration intended....ALL people are created equal and we applaud John McGinley's good work." http://www.foxnews.com/oreilly/  Click on Reality Check 3/5/09 - 1:15 (his "Check Two"). He also read from a viewer's letter on 3/6/09 where the writer was defending the use of the word but I couldn't find that anywhere.

I am sick and tired of mr. bill, don't get me wrong, but the idea of creating an arguement where there isn't one, really get's me going, now that meaning making a big deal out of the dreaded "r" word, of course I'm speaking of retard, and those who fight so hard to have people stop saying it is, well, ... retarded. Now heard me out, with all the troubles and worries and starvation in the world let's go and attack anyone who has a public face when they use the "r" word. Don't you think we could use our time and resoucres to attack a larger issue in this country. I mean what about the economy? you talk about intolerance, we just voted in a black president for christ's sake, what planet are you from to say we need more tolerance for people who are "mentally challenged, or metally reatarded" saying the "r" word is not a slam it's an abbreviation of mentally retarded, even in music there's retardando, italian for slower, it's a word that has meaning but people now a days are taking such offense to it's abbreviation that you're making it an issue, use your time and resources to counquer something more productive instead of fighting something that doesn't exist, you freakin retards, and yes that could be considered insensitive, but look at it's context, you're acting silly and you need observation for your actions just like those who ARE mentally challenged, so what seperates you from those who do need the physical care, which I do support and think that's the special olypmics is a great event, but honestly, let's get the sand out of our vagina's a not take everything to heart so easily, it wasn't meant to offend anyone and you knw that, but you could say it did, well, I could say that mcdonald's commercials offend me because there aren't any white people in them, I'm sure you're busting at your hippie seems to come up with an intolerance remark, but you know what, I honestly don't care what mcdonalds does or what obama said on the tonite show, they were just words and words are cheap, it's actions that define who a person is, and unless those people who say the "r" word go a physically harm or act upon hating on mentally challenged folk, forget about it. We're not in the fiftiesa anymore where we had civil un rights and people were being hurt for their differences, for the most part we're not going to go and linch a mentally challenged person, so stop freakin out and understand that it's a figure of speach, and a synonym for dumb.

cptwinks- i bet you don't have very many friends. sure, you freely use the word 'retard' because you think its just a word. but if you knew anyone that had a mental disability or if you werent so self-centered, you would think diffrently. the word 'retard' isn't just a word- it's hate speech and it's disrespectful. when you said that 'retard' was another word for 'dumb', you were inplying that people with mental disabilities are dumb. i feel sorry for you. instead of doing the more mature thing and fessing up to using hate speech, you instead try to beat down those who can't even defend themselves or help it that they were born with a disability. its pretty pathetic that your vocabulary is so small that the only synonym that you can think of for 'dumb' is 'retarded'.

also, the economy and money are just material things. in the end, they mean nothing. but being kind and respecting others will last forever. everyone should feel welcome and respected in the world.

  • CptWinks must be kidding

You need to educate yourself. First of all the word "retarded" is not a synonym for dumb. Get a thesauras and look it up. Secondly, the only thing you proved with your intentionally hurtful tirade is that you are ignorant and unworthy of any person's time or attention. A good person strives NOT to hurt people. A good person strives to make the world better and they teach their children, family, friends, and associates to do the same through good actions and good words. Someone who logs onto a site with the sole intention of putting down and evicerating people, some who are not capable of fighting back embodies the true meaning of BULLY.

You sir are a bully, in the strictest most awful connotation of the word. You don't want to educate yourself or stop to consider what you are hurting- then don't but don't come on here talking about there are more important things for the world to be doing then worrying about the r-word. I'm sure back in the fifties people argued that it was much more important for people to be worrying about a myraid of other things than the n-word, or the strew of sexist slurs used against women. Thankfully the educated majority realized the hurtfullness of what they were doing and drowned out the ignorant worthless majority like you. You would rather hurt someone who has done NO harm to you than have the strength, courage, and heart to realize that what you are doing is wrong.

I'm not gonna change your mind and that's fine, but thankfully through programs like this and pledges made by people that ARE willing to consider their words carefully and think about who they hurt when they use bigoted hate speech against innocent people, people like you who cite cries of "how stupid it is" will be drowned out, eventually to the point of silence. It is people like you that should be ostracized and cast out of society so that our society can flourish into the accepting place it should be. I for one am embarrassed that I spent four years dressing in a uniform everyday, putting my life on the line for people like you, it makes me even more sad that my husband is still doing it so that you can hide behind your petty words and inability to articulate a thought that has any value in society because you are too busy bullying to do so. Thankfully, I remember all the good people, especially those involved in organizations like this one who do good work and deserve every bit of sacrafice and work that me and mine have to do. If you want to see stuborn, you're looking at it and I can promise that I will work until my last breathe to help drown those voices out that seek to destroy and hurt what they don't even have the common decency to deserve to know.

I will always be thankful that I have a brother that is differently abled, seeing posts like yours remind me what a wonderful gift he gave me in being able to accept and love people who are different and hate and dislike those that attempt to behave as tyrants to hold them down just because of their differences.

“The six most important words: I admit I made a mistake. The five most important words: You did a good job. The four most important words: What is your opinion? The three most important words: If you please. The two most important words: Thank you. The one least important word: I.”
