Of coursre it was just last October that Madonna referred to Guy Ritchie as "emotionally retarded" while on stage in Boston in front of 20,000 people. Sigh... I'm going to let the tabloids dive into the obvious comments about immaturity, lack of originality or overt comparisons to the verbal equivalent of limp wristed slap fights going on between Madonna and Ritchie.  That's their business. What concerns me, actually check that, what annoys the crap out of me, is that a year after Madonna's uttering of the R-word toward Ritchie, we've gone exactly nowhere as a society despite the efforts around the "Tropic Thunder" protests, the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign and so forth.  Don't get me wrong, there's been lots of great work and there is lots of great work being done right now to continue the battle for respect and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities by raising society's awareness to the hurtful nature of the R-word.  But man is it frustrating sometimes.  So in an effort to work off some of that frustration, I'd like to encourage you to let Guy Ritchie know how you feel about him using the R-word as an insult.  Tell him how it makes you feel.  Tell him why it hurts.  Tell him why he should stop.  Tell him about the accomplishments you've made in your life.  Tell him that you expect better from him.  Invite him to one of your local Special Olympics events and ask him how he feels about using the R-word afterwards. If you need some inspiration in what message to send to Mr. Ritchie, I've embedded the letter that our Chairman, Tim Shriver, sent to Madonna after last year's incident.  There will be a letter of similar nature going to Mr. Ritchie in the immediate future, rest assured. During these years, I witnessed the rapid speed of Chinese SO’s development; I witnessed that the children stepped out of their own families and serve for the society by themselves; I witnessed that one child after another defeated the troubles, faced them and challenged profane prejudices. I do remember that I took part in the birthday party with my son for her held by Mr. and Mrs. Bush in White House on the date of July 10th, 2006, hearing her speech personally. It is because of this lady who founded SO 41 years ago that unnumbered disabilities’ life from the globe have been changed, and contribute to the society in order to be accepted; it is because of SO that many intellectual disabilities are willing to show their gorgeous smiles again, got the courage to face the reverses on the way to success, which is expressed by the love and care from the society ubiquitously. Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver is a respected lady who donated all her lifetime into charity. The great event brought people sports, happiness and dignity, her selflessness and universal love won the esteem with reverence. Although many children have never seen her, the old lady who is covered with silver hair and a benignant look will appear in their dreams, hugging them. Those children will love her ardently; respect her just like their own grandma.   We will work harder although our beloved Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away. I am deeply grieved when heard of Mrs. Shriver’s death.   I was an introverted boy, ____and shy with strangers. Since I first participated in Greece in 2002, my enthusiasm with SO erupted unmanageably, later on basketball, golf and football--- all became my favorites and I _____ my school in a number of competitions.   So sport training and competition brought about a lot of change to me ---- I became physically stronger, more confident and a totally new boy. I acquired valuable friendship in my training and competition and more laughers in my family. I tried hard to win victories and felt my social value. She loved the SO family and advocated for the well-being of the population. She believed that the ID persons could (individually or collectively) achieve more than anyone thought possible, and their future might be radically different.   Her faith in them allowed her to hope for an army of supporters --- coaches, volunteers, donors and others --- that would emerge and grow, and become the foundation upon which a worldwide human rights movement would be built.   A Chinese doctor, I was trained by SO in 2003 and joined in the rank of volunteers working for “ Healthy Athletes” program. The purpose of HA is to provide to the SO athletes through medical examinations by the professional doctors, health consultations and relevant help to allow them to cultivate good living habits to facilitate health and fitness so as to elevate the athletes’ capabilities in training and competitions. HA improves the athletes’ health, heightens their sense of caring for the health, emphasizes the application of healthy methods, and trains them to use healthy ways and advocates for positive and balanced healthy measures.   On top of allowing the ID population to merge into society and feel the care and love by the society, HA also provides opportunities for the public to devote their care and love for the ID, or a platform to facilitate civic virtues that leads to a harmonious society.   I am thankful to Special Olympics founded by Mrs. Shriver, which provided me with a platform to serve the ID people. In that process, all the rest of my life will be full of force of love. I will learn from Mrs. Shriver to contribute to ID people in China and elsewhere in the world.   Mrs. Shriver’s faith in the SO athletes was unfailing. It was due to her far-sight SO was founded and grew. Her death is a great lose. But I am sure her unfulfilled wish will continue to be realized by her family, friends and millions of others in the world who were influenced and changed by SO. In her memory we will continue to fight to realize her grand vision; to change and improve the life of the ID population, their families and the communities they are in. She loved the SO family and advocated for the well-being of the population. She believed that the ID persons could (individually or collectively) achieve more than anyone thought possible, and their future might be radically different.   Her faith in them allowed her to hope for an army of supporters --- coaches, volunteers, donors and others --- that would emerge and grow, and become the foundation upon which a worldwide human rights movement would be built.   A Chinese doctor, I was trained by SO in 2003 and joined in the rank of volunteers working for “ Healthy Athletes” program. The purpose of HA is to provide to the SO athletes through medical examinations by the professional doctors, health consultations and relevant help to allow them to cultivate good living habits to facilitate health and fitness so as to elevate the athletes’ capabilities in training and competitions. HA improves the athletes’ health, heightens their sense of caring for the health, emphasizes the application of healthy methods, and trains them to use healthy ways and advocates for positive and balanced healthy measures.   On top of allowing the ID population to merge into society and feel the care and love by the society, HA also provides opportunities for the public to devote their care and love for the ID, or a platform to facilitate civic virtues that leads to a harmonious society.   I am thankful to Special Olympics founded by Mrs. Shriver, which provided me with a platform to serve the ID people. In that process, all the rest of my life will be full of force of love. I will learn from Mrs. Shriver to contribute to ID people in China and elsewhere in the world.   Mrs. Shriver’s faith in the SO athletes was unfailing. It was due to her far-sight SO was founded and grew. Her death is a great lose. But I am sure her unfulfilled wish will continue to be realized by her family, friends and millions of others in the world who were influenced and changed by SO. In her memory we will continue to fight to realize her grand vision; to change and improve the life of the ID population, their families and the communities they are in. As a veteran medical volunteer serving Healthy Athletes program for nearly a decade I am much grieved. I first heard about this great name in San Diego, California, when I involved in a SO activity, and learned about her contribution to the movement, as well as the accomplishments her team had made. My reverence to the lady kept growing along with my participation in SO events. It impressed me even more in September 2007 when she came to China again for the world games in Shanghai. She already had had a stroke when she appeared among us in that hot summer afternoon. Pushed in a wheel-chair by her son, she toured almost all the spots in our athlete healthy screening center, saying hello to athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff from different countries and of different age and race. All of us greeted to this distinguished lady, paying our tribute. From my close observation I found her fatigue and really being old. She was trying hard to accomplish her mission with her utmost efforts and spirit. Her son was waving to the crowd while pushing forward his mother in the wheel-chair so as to ease her fatigue. But people didn’t want to miss the chance to seeing her, touching her hands.   The scene leaps up vividly before our eyes and we wish her longevity and see her again in Beijing. The cruel fact is that she has gone forever after less than two years since we met last. She left for heaven forever with her worry and sentimental attachments, her rigidity and loyalty to Special Olympics. The lady has gone but the career she started will carry on and flourish. We firmly believe her spirit will continue to lead us forward and maintain our great family’s unity, friendship and solidarity. Eternal glory to Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver! As a veteran medical volunteer serving Healthy Athletes program for nearly a decade I am much grieved. I first heard about this great name in San Diego, California, when I involved in a SO activity, and learned about her contribution to the movement, as well as the accomplishments her team had made. My reverence to the lady kept growing along with my participation in SO events. It impressed me even more in September 2007 when she came to China again for the world games in Shanghai. She already had had a stroke when she appeared among us in that hot summer afternoon. Pushed in a wheel-chair by her son, she toured almost all the spots in our athlete healthy screening center, saying hello to athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff from different countries and of different age and race. All of us greeted to this distinguished lady, paying our tribute. From my close observation I found her fatigue and really being old. She was trying hard to accomplish her mission with her utmost efforts and spirit. Her son was waving to the crowd while pushing forward his mother in the wheel-chair so as to ease her fatigue. But people didn’t want to miss the chance to seeing her, touching her hands.   The scene leaps up vividly before our eyes and we wish her longevity and see her again in Beijing.
