Youth Delegates respond to "R" Word used on The O'reilly Factor Comments

DrSteve, 8 months ago | FlagCorrect, it's how the word is used, not the word itself that cause harm. But in the vast majority of cases when the word retarded is used I sincerely doubt it is in the medical or diagnosticway, like I use it. Yup, mental retardatio n is a real thing, but it is also real when some kid calls another retarded and there is someone with a disability standing next to him/her. It's easy to dismiss other's concerns about these things when you don't know what they experience . Do not hide behind the free speech argument. Free speech needs to be responsibl e speech and is protected when it concerns political arguments or religious speech, not when you call someone retarded. -
maxwahrhaftig, 8 months ago | FlagThis word, which I'm assuming will be censored if I submit it, has a very specific meaning. It may not be the most medically appropriate term, but that doesn't make it an insult. A person who lazily uses it to indicate something generally negative or stupid is just advertisin g their ignorance, but there is nothing hurtful about using a word according to its well accepted definition . The issue is maltreatme nt of real people, not the forced adaptation of a language spoken by billions. -
nirvonic, 8 months ago | FlagWhatever happened to free speech in America?
Whether or not you agree with what people say or how they say it, millions of people have died for your right to say it. If anyone has lost someone due to war whether it be WWII, Vietnam or Iraq, you should really be second guessing whether we should stop using the ANY word. You may not agree, but it is what makes our nation a free and democraticsociety. -

I agree with armasylvia, We should be changing the mentality of the word not the word itself. this word was PC 20 years ago but now it is not? Why? Because of what the word means. I also don't think you can lump 'Retard' into the same catagory as Ni**er, Fa**ot, etc. Mental Retardatio n is a clinical term as opposed to the others which are solely used to negativley describe race, religion or sexual preference . If people think Retardatio n is a negative, whatever word you give it is going to have negative meaning. I can understand if this word was made up in a negative way, but it wasn't, it was used to describe a mental condition, so either educate people about it's meaning or suck it up. -
armasylvia, 8 months ago | FlagI do not agree, then we will go against the word slow, etc....I think we should focus on the intent of the word not the word itself. For example, I am fat. I am not against the word fat. Does it change the meaning if someone calls me "plus-sized"? No, they are still telling me I am fat.
Why focus on the word "retarded". The label itself is called "Mental Retardatio n". Dick Morris did not misuse the word or make fun of anyone. He actually used the word correctly.
v. intr. To be delayed. He was stating he did not understand. He never used it in a way of "making fun" of someone in the way that President Obama did last night.
As a special education educator, I feel we need to focus on the intent and use of words rather than the word itself....or we will never change anything. In schools gangs use "colors" If they use red and we ban red then they use blue, then we ban blue then they use orange, etc.....AT TITUDE IS THE REAL HANDICAP -
hannahkasal, 9 months ago | FlagWow. This is an amazing thing that's been done. Im glad to see that some people are willing to stand up and do what's right. This IS what's right. Getting the word out and across that we don't want the R-word being said. Especiallyacross the Nation like it has been. Good job guys. -
jcusack, 9 months ago | Flagthanks for all the comments guys!
i am one of the creators of the videos and i think that we were taught righht.
not meny ppl think of the word retard in that context.
they use it ingnorantly since they dont know the meaning.
there is a reason why the Rword is rarely used on tv..and b/c it is offensive,is the reaon. -
MADdiplomacy, 9 months ago | FlagI am an advocate for Special Olympics and I think that this is ridiculous! The man used it in context meaning he's behind in knowledge, not that he's mentally retarded or comparing himself any way to that effect. The word has been taken out of context and someone should educate these children with the dictionary definition of retard [pronounce d ri-tard with the second syllable being stressed, not the first) or to retard (same pronunciat ion) as a properly used verb and not a heinously used noun, which is what this video is promoting. I'm all about PC, but enough is enough! This is propaganda . The word harms no one! The meaning and context does. It's a weapon if used improperly . It is a civil means of communicat ion if used properly. Any word is. Why don't we teach these children not to care what others think and to care about how they feel about themselves inside. This will aid them in facing the harshnesse s of our society as well.
