                            A STORY BY ONE OF THE YOUTH IN NAIROBI

    My name is Stephen Ochieng from Salama Primary School, Nairobi, and our school has a special unit. I am in class six in the regular stream.

    I learnt about Special Olympics from our teacher Mr. Muiruri, who teaches in the special unit. Through Mr. Muiruri I started participating in a program for sports and games together with Intellectually Challenged pupils. We play football and also compete in athletics.

    This training program is very good because it keeps us active and healthy and also made us become friends with the pupils in the special unit.

    Partcipating in the Young Athletes/Familiy Funday organised by Special Olympics Kenya was a rewarding experience for me and my son Mash.

    I had resigned myself to the fact that my son would never prosper in anything but seeing him participating in the young athlete activities I realised that he had a talent in sports and now I have hope that my son will prosper in something; sports. The happiness I saw in my son's face on that day cannot be equalled to anything, by the time we were going back home all he wanted to acquire was a ball, he kept on asking me if I will by him a ball on our way home.

• young athlete demonstration

    special Olympics Kenya held a Young Athlete demontration/Family fun day on 6th June 2009 at the University of Nairobi,  more that 30 parents and their loved ones participated.

    The event  saw the young athletes participating in 7 young athletes activities. The families enjoyed the opportunity given to them to assist their loved ones learn and acquire sports skills.

• World Winter Games

    My Story is all about  the  World  Winter Games.  It was   all  fun  meeting  people  and  sharing  with them  about  special olympics,and  my role  as  an  IGM.    I  enjoyed  the  opening  ceremony  part, where  i  was  involued in placing  the globes  on  the  rings.  My  other  enjoyment was  when  I  joined other  IGMs and our  mentors  to mountains to try  skiing  for  the  first time.                                                                                            

    Thanks   special olympics, you  are the best friend  I  have  ever had.
