      Kasuhiro & Kurtis in 2005

      Fans Connection

Kasuhiro Koinuma, 18 years old figure skating athletes from Japan, had joined Special Olympics for more that 6 years. He competed in both Japan National Games and the World Winter games held in Nagano, 2005. His mother, Takako, never missed the chance to join her son in the games.

During the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2005, they met different skaters from all over the world. Kurtis, my son, a figure skater from Hong Kong, was competing in the same event with Kasuhiro during 2004 the National Game and 2005 World Winter game. Although they spoke different languages, somehow they became friends and recognized and greeted each other warmly during the games. They took pictures together and arranged to meet each other at the canteen; their friendship began at the game.

4 years later, Kushiro was one of the delegates to attend the World Winter Game in Boise, Idaho. He printed 3 pictures he took with Kurtis 4 years ago. He had faith that he would see Kurtis and hand him the pictures. Kurtis, on the other hand, was also wondering if he would see his friend in Boise again.

On the first day of the competition, they met. Although their expressions were not as excited as their parents expected, the 2 families, from different parts of the world, were deeply touched when they greeted each other. Special Olympics had bridged the gap for them, whatever their nationality, whatever their religion, whatever their languages - they had one thing in common - they were members of the Special Olympics family, be it during the game, or back home, they had faith that they would be connected again.

The Special Olympics is an occasion which would bring athletes and their families together. It not only provides athletes with a place for competition, but also an opportunity to cultivate friendship, and an arena to which the athletes’ families would develop a sense of belonging and through which they can establish their world-wide network. It is simply magical!

Jiang Jun(in the middle)is interviewing other Special Olympics athlete

My name is Jiang Jun, a Special Olympics athlete from Wuxi, Jiangsu province in China. As one of the GYS delegates, I participated in the World Summer Games held in Shanghai in 2007 and made lots of friends who come from the other parts of the world. I have seen many fresh things and taken in many new ideas through discussion, interview, webinar etc., which enhance my ability and boost my confidence.

I found a job at KFC after being back to Wuxi. My boss was not to know that I was a Special Olympics athlete at first. In December 2008, I was invited to take part in the East Asia Regional Athlete Congress and I went to ask for leave. When my boss asked for the reason, I explained that I was an athlete and selected to attend the first SOEA Regional Athlete Congress.  And also, I told him that I had been one of the Shanghai World Games. He was so delighted and announced to all staff at KFC “We have a leader from Special Olympics”. Soon after, my pictures with Global Youth Summit and ALPs Governance Training were displayed in the Hall of Fame of Staff. Every guest who sees them give me a thumbs-up sign.

Special Olympics made me being successful and happy. Special Olympics made me being recognized by Society.

  • Youth Delegates respond to "R"

    • From: noahgray
    • Description:

This video is a representation of the strong feelings presented by the delegates of the Global Youth Activation Summit who are advocating for those people with intellectual disabilities. This video was created in the reaction to the use of the "R" word in Bill O'Reilly's show airing February 9. Since the use of the "R" word was used in a derogatory way without a retaliation of O'Reilly these delegates wanted to voice their sadness in the effort to make their voices heard about ending the use of the "R" word.
